WELL & SEPTIC REASSURANCE
About one half of the homes in Maine draw the family’s water from wells and discard waste water into septic systems located on the home’s property. These systems are underground and out of sight. Problems can develop without the owner’s awareness. Understanding these expensive systems can bring peace of mind to the home owner.

As water is used in the home, the height of water in the well is lowered. When the flow of water is turned off, the well is refilled from the surrounding aquifer. The change in the amount of water in drilled or dug wells can be recorded using a pressure transducer and then graphically presented on a computer. The rate of recovery will be compared to the estimated septic design flow based on the number of bedrooms in the home.
Waste water drains from the house into a septic tank where solids are decomposed and separated from liquids. The liquids drain to a disposal area where contaminants are filtered out by the soil. As the system ages, the pores in the soil become clogged and the drainage begins to slow down. During the septic inspection, the systems ability to properly process waste water will be determined.

Wells should be routinely tested to insure the quality of the home’s drinking water.
Ø Radon In Water
Aquifers that pass through materials containing uranium absorb Radon that can be released into the home’s interior during showers, washing clothes and dishes, etc.
Ø Radon In Air
Radon is an invisible, unstable gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soils and is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
